How do you Know if Shrimp is Cooked?
You'll know that the shrimp are cooked when they turn an orange/pink color all the way through. You will also notice that the shrimp curve inward and get firm and stiff.
Once they are no longer translucent, pink and have curved inward, they are cooked.
Ingredients
This shrimp alfredo recipe with shrimp comes together with the following ingredients: shrimp (cleaned and deveined), pasta like linguine or fettucine, grated parmesan cheese, heavy cream, salt and pepper, butter and fresh parsley to garnish.
See recipe card for quantities.
How to Make Creamy Shrimp Alfredo at Home
Cook pasta as per box directions, reserving some pasta water.

While waiting for the past to cook, pat dry the shrimp with a paper towel and place them in a plate.
Cook the shrimp in a large skillet with some butter. You will know they are cooked with they are no longer translucent and pink in color. Transfer to a plate.

Place remaining butter in frypan and let melt.

Add heavy cream and parmesan cheese and stir to a light boil. Add salt and pepper.

As the sauce simmers, add cooked pasta and shrimp to cream sauce and mix to combine on low heat. If you are using short pasta use a colander to drain the water. If you are using long pasta use a spaghetti spoon to transfer the pasta to the skillet with the cream sauce.
Garnish with fresh parsley (optional) and serve.
Storage
Let any leftovers cool down before storing. Store any leftovers in the fridge in a airtight container not longer than 3 to 4 days.
Reheat in a skillet over the stove top for best results.
These ingredients don't stand up well to freezing.
Top Tips
Remember to cook your pasta al dente, meaning not fully cooked. Pasta should have a little bit of a "bite".
Do not rinse the pasta, the starch on the pasta helps the sauce to stick to the pasta.
Reserve one cup of the pasta water, just in case you need more liquid when you add the pasta to the sauce.
Do not overcook the shrimp; they cook quickly and should stay tender
Use freshly grated parmesan for the smoothest sauce.
Simmer the sauce gently so it thickens without separating.
Toss the pasta with the sauce immediately so it coats evenly.
Substitutions and Variations
The best part about cooking, is that there's no ingredient that you couldn't substitute or add to a recipe. Here are some ideas:
- Spice - add some chili peppers, crushed pepper or hot sauce.
- Low-Fat - make it low fat by using milk thickened with a bit of flour or starch
- Bacon - add bacon, pancetta or ham for a salty kick
- Scallops - add other types of seafood, like scallops
- Vegetables - get those veggies in by adding broccoli or spinach to your dish
