Can You Put Garlic Bread Sticks in the Air Fryer?
Yes, if your air fryer is large enough, you can lay them in the air fryer to cook. It will get a bit messy because you need to brush the puff pastry with butter, cheese and herbs. Half way through you will also need to flip them over.
If you have a small air fryer, you may need to cook them in batches, which really doesn't make an air fryer ideal for making puff pastry garlic bread sticks. An oven or toaster oven and baking tray works much better.
This recipe was inspired by this puff pastry pizza recipe and would go very well with lentil soup or this easy clam chowder recipe. If you like puff pastry as much as I do, then you will love other puff pastry and phyllo dough recipes.

How to Make Puff Pastry Garlic Bread Sticks
Thaw puff pastry and place on a non stick baking sheet lined with parchment paper while still cold.
Preheat oven to 400F. Cut puff pastry into strips using a pizza cutter or cookie cutter
Combine melted butter, cheese, garlic powder and brush onto dough strips using a pastry brush.
Twist puff pastry (optional). Brush more butter mixture and sprinkle herbs of your choice.
Bake for 10 minutes or until golden, flipping half way through, when firm. Remove from oven, let cool and serve immediately.
Storage
Once you've cooked these up, it's best to serve them and consume immediately.
I don't recommend storing these because the puff pastry will just get soggy. Freezing is also not recommended.
Top tips
Have the oven preheated and use a pizza/cookie cutter to cut the puff pastry in strips while the dough is partially frozen. Then twist and put in the oven quickly.
Work quickly as you want the puff pastry to remain cool until it enters the oven.
You can also place the cut puff pastry strips on a cool baking sheet. Just remember to place your baking sheet in the freezer for about 30 minutes before hand.
Substitutions and Variations
These puff pastry breadsticks can be customized so many different ways. For example:
- Chili Flakes - add chili flakes to make it hot and spicy
- Tomato Sauce - sprinkle tomato sauce on top for a splash of color and tartness
- Anchovies - add anchovies for a one of a kind taste
- Poppy Seeds - add poppy seeds
- Herbs - add other herbs like rosemary
- Hazelnut Spread - add hazelnut or omit salt/cheese and dip bread sticks in Hazelnut spread for a sweet treat.
If you can think of any other way to make this unique, go for it! I'd love to hear how you made this you own. Just drop a comment below.
Equipment
A non stick baking sheet is recommended. If you don't have a non stick baking sheet then make sure that you have some parchment paper to make baking and clean up easy.
Also to cut the strips of puff pastry a pizza cutter or cookie cutter will come in handy.
