What is Burrata?

Burrata is a fresh Italian cheese made from cow's milk (traditionally buffalo milk).

It has an outer shell that is smooth and made of mozzarella and the interior is filled with a stracciatella and cream giving it a soft, creamy texture that flow out when cut.

Burrata has a delicate, milky, and butter flavor, mild tasting but rich. It is typically served fresh paired with tomatoes, salads, crusty breads or drizzled with olive oil and a sprinkle of salt.

Recommendations from Mamma and Me

This dish is best served while the grape tomatoes are still warm so that you can fully enjoy the oeewy gooewy texture and taste of the burrata mixing into the pesto and olive oil.

Ingredients

This burrata salad doesn't require a lot of ingredients. You'll need: grape tomatoes, burrata, olive oil, garlic clove, red onion or shallot, a baguette, fresh basil leaves, pesto sauce, white wine vinegar, salt and pepper.

Serve with warm, crusty bread and while the tomatoes are still warm. Use a knife to break open the burrata in front of your family or guests.

Storage:

Burrata salad doesn't store very well and is best consumed the same day you prepare it.

Top Tips

Olive Oil - remember to add more olive oil before serving.

Serving - serve warm and break open the cheese with a sharp knife letting it ooze out of it's shell in front of your family or guests.

Bread - serve with a French Stick or a Baguette that's been lightly toasted and sliced.

Variations

Here are a few variations to consider:

  • Bocconcini - instead of using burrata, you could also use bocconcini and tomato salad
  • Olives - add kalamata olives or black sundried olives for a salty bite
  • Chili Flakes - add chili flakes for a little bit of heat
  • Balsamic Glaze - add a drizzle of balsamic glaze for some more sweetness.
  • Stracciatella - if you don't have burrata you could substitute it with stracciatella.

The perfect recipe isn't that far away. I'd love to know how you substituted ingredients to fit your dietary needs. Drop a comment below and let me know!
