What Is the Paleolithic diet?

The Paleo Diet is better known as the Caveman Diet, Hunter Diet or Stone Age Diet. Although some people think it is a fad, there are some who live religiously by this diet eating foods that would have only been around prior to farming.

Basically if the food wasn't eaten by a hunter, then it wouldn't be consumed if you are on a Paleolithic Diet.

What Foods are Restricted on the Paleo Diet?

Farming changed the way we ate. Farming introduced things like dairy, wheat products and legumes. It's believed that these products increased the onset of Heart Disease and other chronic and metabolic diseases.

Types of Food You Should Avoid on a Paleolithic Diet:

  • Grains, such as wheat, oats and barley
  • Legumes, such as beans, lentils, peanuts and peas
  • Dairy products
  • Refined sugar
  • Salt
  • Potatoes
  • Highly processed foods in general

The Paleolithic Diet is similar to the Whole30 Diet. However, with Whole30, you avoid added sugars and baked goods.

Paleolithic Dieters can include items that hunters were able to hunt and gather, like:

  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Lean meats, especially grass-fed animals or wild game
  • Fish, especially those rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, mackerel and albacore tuna
  • Oils from fruits and nuts, such as olive oil or walnut oil
  • Honey/Maple syrup

With a Paleo Diet, you can re-create baked goods provided you are using compatible ingredients.

This can create somewhat of a challenge for baking cakes and such.
