How do you store Avocados?
You may have seen the TikTok craze where people store their avocados in a container filled with water. While this does keep avocados from getting brown, it is not safe and may cause harmful pathogens that could be living on the avocado to multiply in water. Moral of the story? Don't believe everything you hear, do your research.
The best way to store avocados is to place them in the fridge when they are ripe. If you have cut avocado you can brush it with lemon juice or olive oil to slow down the browning process and wrap it in plastic wrap. If you don't mind the brown color on avocados, simply store it wrapped.
Is the brown part of an avocado bad?
If you just recently cut an avocado and placed the cut pieces in the fridge, it's likely they will turn brown. Avocados turn brown as part of a chemical reaction to reaching oxygen. The brown part of an avocado doesn't mean that it's gone bad.
What is the easiest way to cut avocados and remove the pit from avocados?
The easiest way to cut avocados is the cut it lengthwise around the pit and all around the avocado. Twist the avocado to open it, then take a knife and slap it against the pit to wedge the knife into the bone. No lift the knife and the bone will come out with it.
Once you have removed the pit, you can scoop the avocado meat out and eat it or you can cut it again in half lengthwise. Then slice it.

Instructions on How to Make Tomato Avocado Toast
Avocado toast is so easy to make. Start by mashing up or slicing your avocado.
Slice your tomatoes vertically while you toast your bread in the toaster.

Lay the avocado slices over one slice of sourdough bread and then lay the tomato on top.
Spray olive oil on top of the tomato and season. Lightly dress your leafy greens and arrange them on top of your tomato.

Top with other slice of bread. Cut in half and enjoy. Serve and eat immediately.
Top Tips
Let the freshly toasted bread stand in the toaster and slightly cool to a crisp. You won't burn your fingers.
When seasoning the tomatoes with salt, let stand for a minute or two while the salt draws out extra water and flavor molecules. The result is a flavorful avocado toast bite.
For tomatoes, vine ripened tomatoes are the best choice rather than a tomato that is not ripe or was picked prematurely and ripened during transportation.
If you are not sure, leave your tomatoes out by a window for a day or two before storing them in the fridge.
Substitutions and Variations
Most often I use sour dough bread for my avocado toast because that's what I have sitting in the fridge. But you can use any type of bread that is sitting in the fridge. Here are some options:
- Bread - you can use sourdough, pumpernickel, fortified bread, keto bread or any other favorite bread.
- Additional Ingredients - add onion, garlic, or diced peppers to your avocado mixture.
- Avocado - substitute hummus for the avocado
- Protein - add chicken or mash up tuna with avocado or even a fried egg.
- Spicy - add red pepper flakes to add a little heat
- Topping - add a drizzle of reduced balsamic vinegar or any other type of glaze for some added flavor
- Kid friendly - add a side of potato chips (ketchup chips!)
- Gluten Free - use sweet potato as the toast and make it gluten free.
Add in your favorite ingredient even if it isn't listed above.
Like any other recipe, you can customize this toast to add a personal touch.
Reflection: Cooking is like science, you need to experiment with different combinations to come up with the perfect result (for you). But, don't worry if it's not perfect. Pat yourself on the back for trying, you deserve it! Just try and figure out what you did wrong and do it different next time.

Equipment
For this toast I used my 4 slice Cuisinart Artisan Toaster. I absolutely love that the toaster can toast 4 slices of bread at one time and comes with options for toasting bagels, frozen bread, reheat option and a cancel button.
Good knives are a must for slicing your tomatoes. Always remember to slice your tomatoes vertically. If you slice them horizontally, all the tomato pulp will fall out of the tomato and make a big mess.
A good cutting board is also a must for the kitchen. Stay away from wooden cutting boards though as they are harder to sanitize. Plastic cutting boards will not be as smooth as wooden cutting boards but are a lot easier to sanitize and most can be placed in the dishwasher for easy sanitization.
Storage
This avocado toast is best served and eaten immediately. Making this toast ahead of time is not recommended.
So it is no surprise that leftover toast doesn't store well. This avocado toast is no exception.
Try to only make as many servings as you can consume in one sitting. The longer the toast sits, the soggier it will become due to the moisture in the tomatoes.
If you choose not to top with tomatoes, the toast will get hard and stale which also doesn't make for good storage outcomes.
Needless to say, this toast doesn't stand up well to freezing.
